Diesel Theft is Quick, Easy, and Lucrative – That’s Why it’s Probably Happening to You

People bandy about the notion of diesel theft every now and again.

It’s all buzzy and gets an expose on Carte Blanche here, a write up in Business Day there, resulting in South African business owners momentarily being alert to its insidious nature, but then, slowly, everyone loses interest once again.

It’s just nicer to choose to trust our people. It’s more comfortable to believe in our precautionary devices. It’s easier to hope for the best. And then we reason that all of this compromising is okay because really, how big of a deal can it be anyway? The answer… pretty big. With the escalating cost of fuel currently and the ease with which it can be stolen, you probably are losing hundreds of thousands of rands without even knowing. These figures can make or break a business.

Let’s put it further into perspective, just in case you really do think, it doesn’t, or could never happen to you.

  1. It’s EASY. Most regular diesel theft is organised. The truck is parked off a side road, or even at a gas station en route to its predetermined destination and a middleman will siphon from the trucks tank. He will use either a hand or battery operated pump.
  2. It’s QUICK. They can fill a 25L container in less than 2 minutes. That’s a low risk thieving opportunity.
  3. It’s LUCRATIVE. It is believed that drivers take a cut in the vicinity of R150 – R200 per 25 litre container (approx R7.50 per litre). However, the stolen diesel is then sold on by the middlemen at upwards of R10 per litre. (That’s a 30% discount on a very expensive but necessary commodity). Some middlemen are even connected (and brazen) enough to sell the fuel back to petrol stations, who then sell it back to you at pump price.

When the theft is so easy, with such low risk and with such a high return, it’s no wonder that it is becoming more and more of a problem.

It doesn’t have to be this way though. You don’t have to bleed fuel. You can save it and your bottom line by installing one of our TankSafe devices.
